Summary
We are trying to understand how people compartmentalise work on digital devices. Imagine a situation where you’re speaking with a client, and you get a message from your manager saying “Don’t mention that the product is delayed!” How is it that we can keep this kind of separation most of the time, but that sometimes it fails (sometimes with embarrassing consequences)? We are looking for participants who can help us answer this question. You’d first come to a 2.5 hours training session and then come back to participant in the experiment. If you complete both sessions we’ll give you a £50 voucher. Depending on how you perform in the experiment, we’ll also pay an extra £10 bonus for a total of £60. This study takes place in person, please register your interest to arrange a timeslot and you'll be sent an information sheet and lab location.
Additional Info
This study aims to increase our understanding of how elements of the working environment, task similarity, and task separation affect productivity, slips, and user frustration; in particular when working with technology that involves simultaneously working on two computer systems with differing rule sets. We also want to explore how different cognitive styles may change the effect of these factors on productivity, errors, and user frustration. You will be sitting at a desk working on two computer systems to answer a series of questions while following two different sets of rules (one for each computer system). You will be able to complete the task at your own pace, and you are not expected to have any prior knowledge in order to answer the questions, most involve looking up information and entering it into the corresponding boxes. To be eligible to take part you must be either a native English speaker or fluent in English as a second language, have normal-to-corrected vision, and age 18 years or older.
